Coffee Grind Size Chart: How to Choose the Perfect Grind for Better Coffee
Share
Great coffee doesn’t start with just high-quality beans. There are many variables. Starting with the right grind size is one of them.
At Wildwood Mountain Coffee Co., we roast premium coffee in small batches for people who truly care about flavor. But even the best beans can taste bitter or weak if the grind size isn’t matched to your brewing method.
This guide breaks it down simply so you can brew like a pro—every time.
Why Grind Size Matters
Grind size controls how fast water extracts flavor from your coffee:
- Too fine → over-extraction → bitter taste
- Too coarse → under-extraction → weak, sour taste
The goal? Balanced extraction = smooth, rich, flavorful coffee.
We recommend buying whole beans and using a conical burr coffee grinder to grind your beans to the right size for the method of brewing that you are using. We use the Breville BCG820BSS Smart Grinder Pro for Coffee and Espresso. It is programmable and has 60 unique settings. This one is more expensive, but it is doing the work for you.
A less expensive option would be to get one that is not programmable and has what I call a dial wheel that you set to the grind you need. Oxo has one with 15 grind settings. It cover grinds from Espresso to Cold Brew.
Coffee Grind Sizes Explained
1. Extra Fine (Like Flour)
Best for: Turkish Coffee
Texture: Powder-like (0.1 mm)
This ultra-fine grind creates a bold, intense cup. Because it extracts quickly, it’s perfect for traditional Turkish brewing where coffee isn’t filtered.
2. Fine (Like Powdered Sugar)
Best for: Espresso, Moka Pot, AeroPress (short brew)
Texture: 0.2 – 0.35 mm
Fine grounds allow for quick extraction under pressure—essential for that rich espresso shot with crema.
🔥 Pro Tip: If your espresso tastes bitter, your grind may be too fine.
3. Medium-Fine (Like Table Salt)
Best for: Pour Over, Hario V60, AeroPress
Texture: 0.45 – 0.55 mm
This is a sweet spot for many manual brewing methods. It balances clarity and body, giving you a clean, flavorful cup.
4. Medium (Like Sand)
Best for: Drip Coffee Makers, Siphon Coffee, Pour Over
Texture: 0.60 – 0.65 mm
The most common grind size—and for good reason. It delivers a well-rounded, smooth cup that works for everyday brewing.
☕ Perfect for: Your morning coffee routine.
5. Medium-Coarse (Like Coarse Sand)
Best for: Chemex, Clever Dripper, French Press (short brew)
Texture: 0.70 – 0.85 mm
Allows for slower extraction while keeping flavors clean and less bitter.
6. Coarse (Like Sea Salt)
Best for: French Press, Percolator
Texture: ~1 mm
Coarse grounds prevent over-extraction during longer brew times, giving you a bold but smooth cup.
7. Extra Coarse (Like Peppercorns)
Best for: Cold Brew, Cowboy Coffee
Texture: 1.3 – 1.5 mm
This grind is ideal for long steeping times (12–24 hours), producing a low-acid, smooth coffee.
❄️ Cold Brew Tip: Use extra coarse grounds for the cleanest, least bitter flavor.

Why Fresh Grinding Matters
Pre-ground coffee loses flavor fast. For the best experience:
